Low sound volume.
Slow DTMF response.
Unimodem/V

56K Voice FaxModem External (Model No 1784).

03) Any identifying marks present or aliases the device is known by.
Nope.

04) Whether you have found the device to be mostly TAPI compliant or not TAPI compliant.
Marginally TAPI compliant.

05) What Telephony Service Provider (TSP) is included or supported by the device (i.e; Unimodem V, etc.)
UnimodemV

06) Whether the device/TSP combination properly reports a caller disconnect (hang-up).
No.

07) Comments about sound quality and volume.
Sound quality poor.  Amplitude satisfactory.  No volume control.

08) Comments about touch-tone (DTMF) keypress responsiveness.
VERY SLOW.

09) General installation, configuration, and/or operation notes.
No problems in the installation.

10) An estimated "street price" or retail price (if available).
$225.

11) Any additional specifications, ratings, concerns, comments, or whatnot you may like to add.
Very susceptible to recorded DTMF tones.  When playing back a recorded
message ended by a DTMF tone, the recorded DTMF tone would be processed
as a incoming DTMF tone and the associated TAPI callback would be activated.
This did not happen with any of the other voice modems I used.

TAPI compliant.

05) What Telephony Service Provider (TSP) is included or supported by the device (i.e; Unimodem V, etc.)
Provided at their web site (both Win95 and WinNT).

06) Whether the device/TSP combination properly reports a caller disconnect (hang-up).
Yes.

07) Comments about sound quality and volume.
Sound quality very good (default sample rate 11,025 Hz PCM, 8 bits per sample).

08) Comments about touch-tone (DTMF) keypress responsiveness.
Ok, but suffers with newest SAPI SPEECH.DLL from Microsoft.  Probably due to excessive queuing of data.

09) General installation, configuration, and/or operation notes.
"Trying".  NT install requires 100 MB download.  Installation procedure WAY
to complicated.  Under WinNT, a single clip about 1/4 second into the audio
is experienced with SPEECH.DLL included in SAPI 3.0.  Problem resolved with
a more recent version I've obtained but response time is significantly
slower (~1 sec with 3.0 SPEECH.DLL, ~2.5 sec with 4.x SPEECH.DLL).  Host
system a Pentium NT 4.0 SP3 100 MHz, 40 MB system.

Win95 system audio also suffers in the initial portion of a TTS text stream.
After a few seconds it improves, but occasional broken audio is still heard
(using dedicated 150 MHz Pentium, 48 MB memory, AT&T Watson 2.1 engine).
Win95 system sometimes fails to detect any DTMFs for the entire telephony
session.

10) An estimated "street price" or retail price (if available).
NA

See 9.

About $52 "street price"

We have re-tested and evaluated the ActionTec 56K bps DeskTalk Internal
Voice Fax Modem with Speakerphone.  While, in our previous testing, we had
received two modems (in a row) that had many problems, our current  tests
have revealed that, WHEN WORKING, these modems seem to perform with TAPI in
an above average manner (depending on the phase of the moon (smile)).
Though, the sound output (to caller) low-volume problems and reliability
issues have yet to be addressed, we feel that this modem can be again be
cautiously added to our list of TAPI compliant voice modems.

One of the better modems we have tested are the Zoom Comstar 33.6k models.

The have fair voice quality
They support silence detection
They install and work with the drivers included on the installation CD

On the down side, speakerphone use is buggy and prone to errors.

David Bevins <dbevins@mtnsys.com> wrote in article

We tried this modem and were pleased with the initial results.  So pleased
we ordered a dozen and shipped to our customers.

All 12 came back.  Apparently the newer Firmware had caused sound quality to
go out the Window.

Pretty sad when a firmware update downgrades the modem.  Maybe there has
been a new firmware released since our test?

Best regards,

David B.

Like the ProLine/2V, you need to download their installation software which
is 100 MBs and requires a good deal of work to get it installed.
